The main books to study right now are Founding of Christendom, Our Goal and Our Guides, How to Read a Book, and Jensen's Format Writing/Classical Composition. Also important is reading primary and key secondary sources. It doesn't really matter what order I read these in but it is probably helpful to write out initial reactions.
Books to Read Through
It seems helpful to write "background" notes before actually writing out the lesson plans for K. Takes time but seems to help for clarity. I will write those here unless they seem to relate to Quotidian or raise general questions.
I'm bolding the more important ones.... basically the "spine" texts that help keep me focused.
Founding of Christendom -- write background posts before actually writing out lesson plans.
In the Beginning (optional -- for background).
Genesis: The Book of Origins (read through and pick excerpts for K to read)
History of Civilization -- only first three units.
- Various Primary Sources -- Plutarch, Herodotus, Xenophon, Thucydides --
- Various secondary -- Edith Hamilton, Kitto, Michael Grant -- optional background reading.
- Literature -- Meno, Crito, Trial, etc -- use Norms and Nobility grade 9 for list
- Bible -- see Hicks list -- and what is covered in FoC.
Jensen's Format Writing -- probably do only paragraph types this year, then go to CCT
Composition in the Classical Tradition -- this can take 3 years -- Classical Rhetoric in the 4th year? Narrative, Fable, Description -- Expansion, Contraction.
How to Read a Book -- can take 3 years.
Our Goal and our Guides -- keep going through slowly
A Biology Textbook -- I need a scope and sequence.
Natural History syllabus -- write out background posts trying to figure out how to do this.
As these come up.......
- Euclid
- Wheelock's
- Jacob's Geometry
- Vocabulary
- Grammar
- Humani Generis
- Logic
- Ancient History Sourcebook
Mere Christianity?
Heretics?
Keep adding through the year.
Thoughts
I need to think about grammar and vocabulary. There is a lot of vocabulary to be learned connected with the subject matter -- should I focus on those things???? It might be better that way. There seems to be an art of definition which is closely related to reason (see categories, on interpretation and analytics)
Grammar is sentence analysis. Though it's important for him to know the parts of speech etc the real heart of of grammar is comprehension/ eloquence. See Jesuits and Ed Vavra for this.
On Christian Teaching has a note on the Christian orator. Other books to read for background -- Poetics, Rhetoric, Classical Rhetoric, Aristotle's Organon, etc.
On the Parts of Animals -- about learning science.
A lot of the first year TAC curriculum is implicitly about learning and teaching.
